Catamaran Galley Layout: An Array of Choices on Windelo Catamarans

Every yacht design is a delicate balance between speed, comfort, space, style, and seaworthiness. What makes the Windelo range so distinctive is its ability to bring these qualities together in a way that feels both high-performing and deeply liveable. On board a Windelo from 50 to 63 feet, performance sailing does not come at the expense of comfort — it opens the door to a new way of living at sea.

When a catamaran offers this much interior volume, the question is no longer simply how fast you want to sail, but how you want to live on board. The layout you choose will shape everyday life: how you cook, how you move through the space, how you share moments with family and friends, and how connected you remain to the sea while underway.

Today, we turn to the heart of life on board: the nacelle, and more specifically, the galley and saloon. On the 50 to 55, Windelo offers two distinct galley configurations — U-shaped or L-shaped — each designed to suit a different style of sailing, cooking, entertaining, and living onboard

Why the Saloon and Galley Matter

On a performance catamaran, the saloon and galley are far more than functional spaces. They are the social heart of the boat — the place where meals are prepared, conversations unfold, children drift in and out, and the rhythm of life on board takes shape.
A well-designed layout changes everything. It influences light, circulation, visibility, comfort underway, safety, and the relationship between inside and outside. It determines whether the cook feels part of the sailing, whether movement through the nacelle feels fluid, and how naturally the boat adapts to both life at anchor and life under sail.
To suit different priorities, Windelo has developed two distinct nacelle configurations, each with its own galley layout. It is a meaningful choice — one that can have a lasting impact on your onboard experience.

Two Galleys, Two Ways of Living on Board

The U-shaped Galley: Generous, Cocooning, and Made for Gourmet Life at Sea
Running along almost the full length of the starboard side of the saloon, the U-shaped galley creates a more enveloping and protective space, ideal for owners who love to cook and want to feel secure and comfortable underway. With the stairs down to the starboard hull positioned between the cockpit-nacelle bulkhead and the galley, everything is organised within easy reach, creating a highly practical space for life at sea.

The dining area moves to port, at the foot of the pilot berth/daybed, allowing the galley itself to become a true dedicated cooking zone. More enclosed than the L-shaped version, it offers a reassuring, cocooning feel — especially appreciated during more agitated passages. It is one of the largest galleys available on a performance catamaran of this size, designed for crews who enjoy preparing proper meals on board, whether for everyday life at anchor or longer offshore passages.

Storage is one of its great strengths. On the Windelo 50 & 51, the U-shaped galley offers 1,006 L of storage and 3.00 m² of worktop area. On the Windelo 54 & 55, this rises to 1,210 L of storage and 3.55 m² of worktop area. It also offers 5.87 lm of linear countertop and 4.1 lm of linear storage on the Windelo 50 & 51, and  7.12 of linear countertop and 4.7 lm of linear storage on the Windelo 54 & 55. From provisions and tableware to cookware and everyday essentials, everything can be stored in one well-organised, centralised space — ideal for family cruising, entertaining friends, and longer crossings.

At anchor, the experience becomes even more convivial. With the aft sliding or tilting windows open, the U-shaped galley extends naturally towards the aft terrace, creating a bar-like space perfect for sharing drinks, tapas, and relaxed moments together. The cook remains connected to the life of the boat — to conversations in the cockpit, to children or friends coming back from the water, and to the easy rhythm of life outdoors. Functional at sea and deeply social at anchor, the U-shaped galley is designed for those who want their onboard lifestyle to be as generous as their sailing plans.

* Even with the air-conditioning option selected, the U-shaped galley remains impressively spacious, with 867 L of storage on the Windelo 50 & 51 and 1,019 L on the Windelo 54 & 55, combined with 3.00 m² and 3.55 m² of worktop area respectively. Add to this 5.87 lm of linear countertop and 3.8 lm of linear storage on the Windelo 50 & 51, and 7.12 lm of linear countertop and 4.4 lm of linear storage on the Windelo 54 & 55, and the result is a galley made for truly generous life on board.

The L-shaped Galley: Open, Fluid, and Connected to Life Under Sail

Positioned forward in the nacelle, directly connected to the cockpit and right on the centre of gravity of the boat, the L-shaped galley is designed to keep life on board feeling open, fluid, and connected to the passage. Its location allows the person cooking to stay engaged with the outside, maintain a visual link with the helm, and share the moment with those in the cockpit.

The L-shaped galley is a walk-up layout, yet its position close to the boat’s centre of gravity makes it especially comfortable to use underway, helping both people and tableware stay remarkably stable at sea.

Just aft of the galley, still to starboard and facing the direction of travel, a dedicated dining area creates a comfortable space for meals while keeping the central passageway clear. This makes circulation through the nacelle particularly smooth, from the forward cockpit to the aft platform — a real advantage in everyday life as well as underway.

The layout also enhances comfort throughout the nacelle. With two separate banquette areas, the saloon feels welcoming and versatile, while direct access to the storage under the portside bench and to the portside watch berth is made easier. More than a pleasant interior, this is a space designed to be lived in and used while sailing.

Compared with the U-shaped version, the L-shaped galley offers less storage, but it remains generous and well organised for life on board. On the Windelo 50 & 51, it provides 680 L of storage, 2.00 m² of worktop area, 4.3 lm of linear countertop, and 3.74 lm of linear storage. On the Windelo 54 & 55, this rises to 861 L of storage, 2.58 m² of worktop area, 4.58 lm of linear countertop, and 3.97 lm of linear storage. In return, this configuration creates a more open feel in the nacelle and allows for a more comfortable starboard aft cabin, with the possibility of a transverse bed layout, just like in the owner’s cabin.

For those who value openness, easy circulation, and a stronger connection between the galley, the cockpit, and the rest of the saloon, the L-shaped galley offers a beautifully balanced solution.

* When fitted with air conditioning, the L-shaped galley offers 643 L of storage on the Windelo 50 & 51 and 786 L on the Windelo 54 & 55, while the U-shaped galley provides 867 L on the Windelo 50 & 51 and 1,019 L on the Windelo 54 & 55.

Two Owners, Two Galley Layouts

To better understand how these two layouts perform in real life, we asked two Windelo owners to share their experience. Manon and Robert own B Cube, a Windelo 54 Adventure with a U-shaped galley, while Jean-Paul owns Vagabond, a Windelo 50 Yachting with an L-shaped galley. Both have already sailed many thousands of miles on board, making them ideally placed to talk about how each layout works at sea.

Jean-Paul and the L-shaped Galley

Jean-Paul, owner of a Windelo 50 Yachting, shares his experience:

“Choosing the L-shaped galley turned out to be one of the best decisions I made for my Windelo 50 Yachting. From the moment I stepped aboard, I appreciated how neatly it fits the saloon’s reduced footprint, giving me clear walkways and a surprisingly spacious feel. Nine months in, I’ve found the counter and cupboard space more than sufficient — especially with the fridge cleverly tucked under the starboard stairs — and presence of the stairs has never been an issue, even in choppy seas.

“What I love most is the seamless connection to the cockpit: with the starboard window open, the galley transforms into an indoor-outdoor entertaining hub. I can prepare meals, chat with guests, and still keep an eye on the chart plotter and the view ahead right from the dining table. Plus, having seating on both port and starboard sides makes the saloon a truly social space. For me, it’s the perfect blend of functionality, comfort, and conviviality.”

Manon and the U-shaped Galley

Manon and Robert, owners of the Windelo 54 Adventure B Cube, couldn’t be happier with their U-shaped galley. As Manon explains:

“The U-shape felt immediately right for us. With just the two of us on board and my love of cooking, the generous wraparound worktop gives us all the space we need to prepare meals, bake, and entertain. It also offers plenty of storage for everything I like to keep on board, from kitchen utensils and tableware to provisions for longer passages. We never miss the extra seating of an L-shape because someone is always enjoying the cockpit’s indoor-outdoor flow anyway.

I chose the U-shaped layout for its abundant countertop and storage; it keeps everything within easy reach and feels wonderfully cocooned. Sure, an island would add a second entry point, but we’d gladly trade that for the extra cabinets and surface area we rely on for long passages.

Best of all, when I’m cooking and Robert is at the helm to starboard, the large cockpit window keeps us connected. I can keep an eye on the sails and still be part of the adventure — for our style of sailing, it’s the perfect balance of functionality and togetherness.”

How to Choose the Right Galley Layout

There is no universal answer — only the layout that best suits the way you sail and live on board.

As Manon puts it: “Your Windelo catamaran is going to be your home and companion on a round-the-world trip for many years to come, so it deserves careful thought. And with Windelo, you actually have a choice.”

Take the time to define your own priorities — what matters most to you, what kind of life you imagine on board, and how you want to move through the space day after day. The right layout often becomes obvious once those priorities are clear.

To help guide your decision, ask yourself a few simple questions:

    • Are you a passionate cook, or do you prefer simple everyday meals?
    • Do you value countertop space more than open circulation?
    • Will you mostly sail as a couple, with family, or with a larger crew?
    • Do you need maximum storage for long passages and provisioning?
    • Do you prefer a dedicated cooking zone or a more open, social layout?

Living the Design and Lifestyle

Beyond the choice of galley, the Windelo nacelle is designed as a truly flexible living space — one that adapts to the rhythm of life on board, from quiet mornings at anchor to long days under sail – an enclosed loft or an outdoor terrace.

Whichever layout you choose, the dining area combines comfort and practicality. Three ottomans create extra seating around the table while also adding valuable storage. In the Yachting version, each one can hold up to 10 bottles of water, but they are just as useful for storing breakfast essentials, children’s snacks, aperitif supplies, or dry goods for longer passages. Tucked neatly under the table, they help keep the floor clear and circulation fluid.

The portside bench adds yet another generous storage area, with up to [XXX L] over 2.5 m in length and 60 cm in width — a discreet but highly practical volume for everyday life on board.

More than an interior, the nacelle is a space designed to live with the seasons. Thanks to the large side, aft, and forward openings, it can be opened almost completely to create a bright, airy XXL living space — like a terrace on the water. Closed, it becomes a protected, cosy retreat from wind, spray, or cooler weather. Open, it welcomes light, fresh air, and an effortless connection with the sea, both underway and at anchor.

Carefully chosen materials complete the experience: Silestone worktops, and recessed LED lighting bring warmth, elegance, and durability to a space where design and everyday comfort go hand in hand.

Conclusion

Your Windelo catamaran is not only your home on the water, but also a living space designed for sailing. The right galley layout is the one that best reflects the way you cook, share, move, and navigate on board — whether that means preparing a family feast at anchor or race-day snacks underway.

For Jean-Paul, the L-shaped galley also brought an additional benefit: more space in the starboard aft cabin, with the possibility of a transverse bed layout. And that opens the door to the next step in the journey.
