The story of Windelo, based in Canet-en-Roussillon, a stone's throw from Catana/Bali, is very recent. It began just a few years ago when Olivier Kauffmann considered building his own multihull with the goal of completing a round-the-world trip with his family.

Windelo Catamarans: Innovations and Ecology – Skippers Sailing & Ocean No. 76 – July – August
The specifications for Olivier Kauffmann's personal catamaran were ambitious: "a high-performance catamaran that's a pleasure to live on, with unprecedented spaciousness." After two years of research and development of new eco-friendly materials, Olivier took the plunge. With his son Gautier, they decided to set up a shipyard – Windelo Catamarans. The 1,600 m² factory, located on the quayside, has been operational since last March.
It too incorporates sustainability elements related to energy and water conservation, waste sorting, and even flexibility in its development: "This
first phase of the factory allows for an annual production of around ten catamarans. The factory is designed modularly and can be quickly expanded depending on the growth of the product range and sales," we were told at the shipyard.
Windelo's key features are therefore a construction method that limits the use of molds, the use of sandwich composite incorporating basalt fiber and polyethylene terephthalate made from recycled plastic bottles, the use of hybrid propulsion, the design of a forward cockpit, and modular layouts.

The first models offered are the Windelo 50 and 54. The design of these multihulls was entrusted to the renowned naval architects Barreau and Neuman. These two catamarans promise to be light, spacious, and enjoyable to sail, with their interior/exterior maneuvering cockpit. The range is available in three versions: Adventure for robustness and reliability on long cruises,
Yachting for comfort and a high-end finish, and finally Sport for optimized performance. The 50 and 54 offer a choice of keels or centerboards.
The manufacturer is also working on three other models – the 45, 48, and 57. The plans are expected to be presented in 2021, with the first launches planned for 2022.
But Windelo, for the past few months, has become more than just a project: the manufacturer signed the first order for a 50 Adventure in 2019; construction started last November for a delivery scheduled for next autumn.

The future owner already has his itinerary in mind: departure from the French coast in May 2021 to reach the Irish Sea, the west coast of Scotland, and the archipelagos of the Hebrides, Shetland, and Faroe Islands. The Windelo 50 and its crew will explore Iceland before a beautiful crossing to North America, leaving Cape Farewell – the southern tip of Greenland – to starboard.
After numerous stops on the east coast, the journey is scheduled to end in the Antilles one year after departure.
