Windelo Catamaran Continues to Innovate, Moving Upmarket with the New Windelo 50 and 54.

Apr 3, 2023

Windelo is all about people who love the sea, sailing, and our beautiful planet. People for whom innovation is the future and who push the boundaries of eco-friendly sailing.

Together, with the architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman, we have given a new identity to our catamarans to reinforce their personality and give them an even more contemporary and racy look while maintaining our points of differentiation which make the current success of Windelo: the use of eco-responsible materials, twin helm in the forward cockpit, the modular loft-style living space, electric motors, and green energy production.

We will share the design and details of these New Windelo 50 and 54, at the International Multihull Boat Show in La Grande-Motte, in April 2023. In September 2023, during the Cannes Yachting Festival, you will discover, in the world premiere, the New Windelo 50 Yachting!

A Winning Team

Never change a winning team! To work on the evolution of the Windelo 50 and 54, we again decided to work with naval architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman. The renowned pair love seaworthy, fast bluewater catamarans. When designing these New Windelo 50 and 54, two concepts were important: modernizing the Windelo catamarans and giving them a more dynamic profile while keeping the core features of the brand.

“Building on the success of the first Windelo 50 and 54 catamarans, a substantial investment has been made in re-designing the New Windelo 50 and 54 to open up new perspectives, in particular, thanks to the freedom of form that this development allows. The collaboration of the talented designer Charlotte Schiffer was a real success. Her contribution can be seen in the smallest details, improving the dynamics of the silhouette without making any concession to the original features: natural light, panoramic views, and spatial continuity that erases the boundaries between the inside and outside, all of which have made the Windelo 50 and 54 so popular.

These New Windelos confirm the rise in standing while affirming the innovative positioning and high performance of these catamarans. “, explains Christophe Barreau.

A Design That Reflects Windelo’s Values: Innovation – Performance – Comfort – Ecology.

We worked to give the catamarans a more striking dynamic appearance, and a stronger character, in line with the brand’s DNA and values. Curved, racy, and dynamic surfaces capture the eye; from front to stern, the eye will follow the acceleration of the surfaces and reflections.

These reflections give this catamaran direction and intention, making it more dynamic and energetic: directional purpose that speaks to the subconscious and stimulates an emotional response.

Innovation at the Heart of the Design Work

When we talk about Windelo innovations, our thoughts quickly turn towards ecology (with the electric motors, energy range thanks to green energy sources and our basalt fiber and PET foam eco-composite) and also the way in which the spaces are managed (forward cockpit, interior/exterior modularity of the nacelle, aft terrace, etc.). The shipyard is extremely committed and pushes the boundaries of the catamaran industry.

In this dynamic, we worked on innovative concepts with software primarily used in the automobile industry, enabling us to offer complex multidirectional lines. Thanks to these new curves and lines, the water, sun, and moon reflect beautifully, really bringing the New Windelo 54 and the New Windelo 50 to life.

The wave theme, historically visible on the sides of the Windelo, is now varied throughout the boat. Through its movement, this wave gives the catamaran a very energetic feel and reflects Windelo catamarans’ performance. A strong feature in the marine environment, the wave also symbolizes the innovations developed by Windelo, hinting the eco-friendly sailing (the electric motors, the production of green energy, and the eco-composite using basalt and PET).

The Windelo wave has been subtly used to combine practicality (facilitating assembly and water run-off) and esthetics. It also highlights the strength and values of the Windelo catamarans: performance, comfort, and innovation.

Performance: Light, Dynamic Design

We automatically think of speed, lightness, and aerodynamics when discussing performance.

Even in light air, Windelo catamarans sail at true wind speed, thanks in particular to the design of their hulls and their perfectly controlled weight (only 11.2 metric tons for a 50-footer and 1.8 tons for a 50-footer).

The new racy yet curvy silhouette

Redesigned to make it airier and lighter, the New Windelos have an even more racy and sleek look. Highlighting the curves in different levels creates a dynamic relief and emphasizes the finesse of the hulls.

A coaming has been designed around the nacelle to underline the features of the forward cockpit (one of the major innovations on the Windelo catamarans). No window frames are visible as the glass is housed seamlessly, giving the nacelle a lower, cleaner line and a sportier look. The curved and racy looks are associated with the new inclination of the superstructure, the result? An elegant and dynamic boat, all in movement, even when at anchor.

Comfort: Designed for Bluewater Cruising

Windelo catamarans are, first and foremost, bluewater cruising catamarans suited to long-distance cruising and exploring distant horizons. Windelo catamarans marry performance with the joy of sailing while creating pleasant, generous living spaces. So, no wonder all the Windelo owners praise the space, the brightness, and the comfort on board their boat that becomes, for a longer or shorter timeframe, their home.

Forward cockpit combining comfort and safety

Safety on board is essential when sailing and is a strong guiding theme for Windelo. The forward cockpit is part of the Windelo DNA, and you will find it on all our ranges, as well as on the New Windelo 50 and New Windelo 54.

Positioned just aft of the mast, it provides the two helm stations with ideal protection from wind and sprays and an excellent view of the sails and bows. Thanks to interior and exterior modularity, the cockpit can be protected from the elements, open onto a galley/lounge space, and even open up entirely to the exterior. All the running rigging is within hand’s reach in the Windelo’s forward cockpit, greatly reducing the need to move about on deck. We felt, nonetheless, that making the side deck more comfortable and the other circulation areas was important.

Several raised areas and a coaming were created on the deck, using the wave as a design theme. They integrate and considerably improve water run-off, leaving a dryer surface while providing a better deck plan and improving general coherence with the boat design.

A completely new nonskid surface, with a more attractive diamond shape texture, is directly integrated into the mold for more outstanding durability of the nonskid effect. Picking up the theme of the wave again and playing with different water run-offs, this nonskid surface adds style, elegance, and safety to the deck of the New Windelo 50 and 54.

Modular nacelle with a panoramic view

As Christophe Barreau explained, one of the great strengths of the Windelo catamarans is their continuity of space. We did not design two living areas, one inside and the other out, but a single seamless modular space that can be opened or closed as much as you like.

Make the most of the sea! In keeping with Windelo’s guiding philosophy, the architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman have achieved the impossible thanks to the clever use of lifting partitions. Windelo and its architects invented a cockpit living space combined with a helm station, opening fully onto the sea. With the clever use of sliding or removable bulkheads and large sliding glass doors, the nacelle has an extra-large interior/exterior space, making your sailing experience and life on board unforgettable.

Comfortable welcoming terrace

The key here is the tilt-up or sliding (garage) door located aft of the lounge. When the weather is good, the saloon opens onto a magnificent terrace on the sea. Operating a winch is all it takes to change the atmosphere completely.

This terrace is extensive at anchor and remodeled for the New Windelos to make our sailors even more comfortable. The hardtop – already generous and very popular with the Windelo 50 and 54 – has been lengthened, resulting in a gain in solar capacity and greater style, making the boat more slender and comfortable. The New Windelo 50 and New Windelo 54 enjoy considerably larger sun and rain protection.

The handling of the transom platforms has also been redesigned on the New Windelos. The angle and rounding of the steps make it easier to access from a tender or after a swim, giving the boat a much warmer welcoming feel from the moment you step aboard.

New design for the interior fittings

Based on a construction method favoring the lightness and the performance of our catamarans – a defining principle of Windelo, the design upgrade was also applied to the interiors of our boats. Varieties of the wave theme can be found both inside and out.

By playing with depth and contrast, the interior design of the New Windelo 50 and 54 is minimalist and lightweight, and the accent is placed on the surroundings and natural light.

The bulkheads and ceilings have mirror strips that catch the water and sun reflections. Enjoy a breathtaking sea view through huge cabin portholes – the perfect way to escape from it all. By capturing natural light reflections, they add vitality and highlight the generous space specific to the Windelo catamarans.

Five new interior harmonies create a distinctive modern look. The overall feeling is luxury in a bright, cozy, and joyful atmosphere.

Loyal to our values, materials and equipment are eco-friendly and favor the weight study, particularly the PET foam core of our interior layout of FSC-certified woods and sustainable, recycled, or biobased textiles.

Ecology – Ocean Future Starts Here

A construction process that reduces the carbon footprint of our catamarans by 47%

A little reminder, the Windelo catamaran structure is made from an innovative, environmentally-friendly composite sandwich, with a mix of basalt fiber (a natural fiber from volcanic rock) and PET foam (from recycled plastic bottles).

This composite reduces the carbon footprint of the production of our catamarans by 47% compared to a traditional glass fiber and PVC foam composite.

  • Basalt rock is one of the most abundant rocks in the Earth’s crust, making it a readily available resource. There is no need for any additives to transform it, and it divides carbon emissions by 10.
  • During manufacturing, PET foam emits twice as little CO² as PVC foam (used traditionally).

Zero-emission sailing: powered by sun, water, and wind

Enjoy silent, eco-friendly sailing on the New Windelo 50 and 54. By combining the power of the sun, water, and wind, you can enjoy carbon emission-free sailing, even when using the motor. With electric motors and the production of green energy, leave your anchorage and set sail for your destination with only the sound of the waves, wind, and fauna for company. No more exhaust fumes and vibrations – sailing is now clean, environmentally friendly, and a really pleasurable experience.

Windelo catamarans are equipped with electric engines (2 x 20 kW) and a large battery bank (48 V – 53.8 kWh), allowing you to sail daily for 4 hours on the motor, using only renewable energy. Thanks to a dedicated bank of house batteries (6.7 kWh – 24 V), you can also use comfortably all the onboard equipment for your comfort as well as all the navigation instruments. The New Windelos’ batteries are charged by green energy first: solar (up to 5 680 W) and hydrogeneration, by a propeller rotating as you sail. As an option, one to two wind turbines can supplement your energy production.

Need more energy and greater engine range? Turn on the generator and switch to hybrid mode.
